The End of the World, December 31, 1999

I remember in the ‘50s, someone said the world would end in the year 2000 – something about the apocalypse

I remember in the ‘60s, someone said the world would end in the year 2000 – the second coming or what not

I remember in the ‘70s, someone said the world would end in the year 2000 – the bomb or something

I remember in the ‘80s, someone said the world would end in the year 2000 – a 2000-year prediction, I think

I remember in the ‘90s, someone said the world would end in the year 2000 – a Sunday morning Jimmy Swaggart or Muslim Cleric, or somebody

It’s now the day before – predictions from faraway always seem different than ones up-close

I don’t think the world will end tonight or tomorrow, but maybe in the year 3000

What Year is it?

The year is 5760 if Muhammad is your King

Or 4697 if Buddha is your man

Or 1420 if you trace your roots to Abraham

Or if you are science geek, you’re saying wait ‘til next year

Those who follow CNN celebrate tonight

What great diversity we have

The Millennium

If asked of the Wise-man , cleric, or king in 999

What say you about the world in 1999?

What would they have said?

Could we, if asked about 2999 be any closer than they?

Would they have guessed about flight?

Or medical cures

Or television

Or the net

Or the world’s greatest power being a country

That then did not exist?
